Booboo's Diabetes Story

It's a good thing that my folks are somewhat aware of when things aren't right. I had been urinating and drinking a lot and starting to have problems jumping up onto the bed and other furniture so they took me to visit my least favourite person, the Vet. As it turns out, after a week or so of humming and hawing and Mom insisting that the Vet take urine and blood samples (that hurt), it was discovered I have diabetes. So now I have to have injections of insulin twice a day!! I think it hurts Mom to give me the injections more than it hurts me and sometimes I give her a hard time. And I'm not very cooperative when it comes to her trying to get a urine sample from me. I like my privacy! I'll keep you posted on how I do with this treatment.

Progress Report

  1. I'm doing very well, my back legs work properly now and my sugar level is purrfecto. (me getting my injection in photo at right, aren't I good?)
  2. On April 20, 2000 at 10:30pm, I went into insulin shock and had to be rushed to the animal hospital. My blood sugar was 28! I was acting a bit weird no doubt but stayed conscious. They shaved my leg, stuck a catheter in my vein and pushed glucose. Then I had to stay there all night and they stuck me 3 times to test my glucose level. I was so happy to see Mom and Dad in the morning. They were so worried about me. Now Mom sticks my ear twice a day to test my glucose level and I haven't had any insulin since.
  3. June 3, 2000: I went back and forth to Germany on the big jet and am still diabetic free!!! I'm not getting tested as often, only once a week now but Mom does test my urine more often.
  4. July 9, 2000: Mum doesn't test my blood anymore, just keeps an eye out on my activity level (whether I can jump or not) and tests my urine on occasion.
  5. December 10, 2000: Still diabetic free and no more testing.
  6. June 13, 2001: no change.
  7. September 18, 2001: no change.
  8. May, 2002 - it's safe to say that I am no longer diabetic - end of story.
  9. We've had to put Booboo on Glucosamine as she seems to be having hip problems - this is helping her. I just hope it doesn't trigger her to go back into a diabetic state.
